Biography
Mexican-Italian tenor Maurizio Trejo has developed from the lyric-spinto repertoire into an Italian dramatic tenor and Heldentenor, combining the line and flexibility of his earlier repertoire with the weight, stamina and upper-register projection required for Verdi, verismo and Wagner.
His Siegmund has been described as possessing a resistant, powerful and heroic voice.
His earlier career encompassed leading lyric-spinto and dramatic Italian roles including Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Don José in Carmen, Canio in Pagliacci, Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana, Luigi in Il tabarro, Rodolfo in La bohème, Alfredo Germont in La traviata, the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor and Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore. His Pinkerton at Sarasota Opera was praised for its clear, strong sound and warmth, while European criticism described him as “a revelation.”
He appeared with the Metropolitan Opera Guild in conjunction with the Wagner Society of New York, performing repertoire from Parsifal, Siegfried and Die Walküre at Lincoln Center, as well as making his New York debut as Verdi’s Otello.
A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, where he was named Panasonic Scholar of the Year, Trejo received the Plácido Domingo Scholarship through SIVAM and was a Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Artist. His European development continued at the International Opera Studio of Opernhaus Zürich, where he appeared in five mainstage productions: Der Kreidekreis under Alan Gilbert, I vespri siciliani under Carlo Rizzi, Der Rosenkavalier and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg under Franz Welser-Möst, and Kinderzauberflöte under Thomas Bartel.
His international career has also included appearances at Carnegie Hall with Opera Orchestra of New York under Eve Queler, the Bregenzer Festspiele, Sarasota Opera under Victor DeRenzi, New York Grand Opera under Vincent La Selva, and companies throughout Europe and the Americas.
A Sony Classical recording artist as one of The American Tenors, Trejo has also explored the Spanish lyric repertoire in La dolorosa, Luisa Fernanda, La tabernera del puerto and El barbero de Sevilla. His concert appearances include a performance in Sofia with soprano Monica Conesa.
Maurizio Trejo is currently focused on the dramatic tenor and Heldentenor repertoire, with particular emphasis on Siegmund, Otello, Parsifal, Canio in Pagliacci, Luigi in Il tabarro, Andrea Chénier, Florestan, and the principal dramatic Italian and Wagnerian roles.
